Stepping Stones,
Endurance Performance, 2017

Stepping Stones, Video still, 2018.

I lay down under a stepping stone, inviting you to step onto me or over me to pass through the doorway. I lay on the ground, as part of the floor, part of the foundation, to help support you as you step on and over me into another space. As I lay, I am also a hindrance to your step, a block to your passage, but my intentions are good. I want to help you.

Stepping Stones is an endurance performance that examines the encounter of caregiving. When we care for another, we also draw the line where the self meets and ends. The interaction between our many selves and others is in constant motion. When does caring become too much (or too little) and detract from the autonomy or agency of the caregiver and care receiver? How does one sustain a balance? These are not straightforward experiences: to pass over, you must step onto or over me. It is a combined effort to step onto and through to the other side. We do not step alone; we step with the help or hindrance of another.
