Dance With Me,
Video Installation, 2013

I believe we are all infused with differing degrees of masculinity and femininity in the same way there are many different shades of light and shadow. Our bodies are fluid, shape shifters and our playing with that assist in understanding who we are and others can be. A black perspex mirror joins the origin projection. The subdued reflection of me dancing reflects the origin. The projection and reflection are inextricably linked: one cannot exist without the other. The viewer’s reflection joins mine when viewing the work and offering to join the dance.

The dancefloor is a cornerstone of queer culture, represented and perpetuated in popular culture. The dancefloor is a space that is opened for expression and exploration of the self. We all move to a beat, whether it is to the music or our own sound. The other dancers interact with that movement and our space.

This work is an idyllic, inclusive performance space where the self is not fragmented into gender or sexuality archetypes but rather a celebration of a self within its own context. There is only the dancefloor, the lights and shadows.

So…do you want to dance?
