Enacting Dream/Always Knitting,
Video Artwork, 2018

Enacting Dreams/Always Knitting is a video of my grandmother unconsciously enacting the action of knitting while sleeping (in the hospital) and then, while awake, consciously knitting. The unconscious re-enactment of the knitting movement is due to Lewy body dementia (LBD), a neurodegenerative brain disorder that disturbs the thinking, movement, behaviour, and mood of a person. Common in LBD are REM (rapid eye movement) and sleep behaviour disorder, where the brain cannot control the body during sleep. This leads the person with LBD to physically “act out” their dreams.

Placing the video within the walker explores the invisibility of diverse bodies in public spaces. The work is a reminder to make visible the way our bodies exist and require visibility, access and understanding
